Abstract
High-spin spectroscopy of Rn, Ra and Th isotopes has been performed. The nu clei have been populated using multi-nucleon transfer reactions involving a Th-232 target and a Xe-136 projectile. This type of reaction offers the on ly mechanism for populating high-spin states in many of these nuclei. Inter leaving bands with opposite parities have been observed to high spin (simil ar to 28 (h) over bar) in Rn-218.220.222, Ra-222.224.226.228 and Th-228.230 .234. A systematic study of the rotational alignment properties of octupole bands in radon, radium and thorium isotopes reveals information concerning the role of the octupole phonon and the onset of stable octupole deformati on with increasing rotational frequency. Measurement of the magnitude of th e intrinsic electric dipole moment, D-0, provides additional information co ncerning the strength of octupole interactions in these nuclei.
