Abstract
In response to even modest social change, vastly increasing numbers of the population in developing countries are opting for the small famil y norm. This responsible behavior is yet to be matched by an adequate response from governments and from the international community. Curren t needs for family planning are largely unmet. Future needs are going to be much greater, in terms of expanding access to services, improvin g quality of services, and broadening contraceptive choices. The volun tary non-governmental sector and the private sector are needed to play an important role in the future. Political commitment, mobilization o f resources and know-how through research will be essential requisites for meeting the future needs.
