Abstract
Frequent copulations in Red-backed Shrikes can be explained best by th e sperm-competition hypothesis. Mate-guarding serves to prevent EPC an d may reduce predation risk. Courtship-feeding at the female's arrival promotes the pair-bond and facilitates mate-guarding and copulations in the fertile period.
