Abstract
A series of laboratory experiments was carried out to examine the inte raction between stratification and turbulence at an inversion layer, w ith the objective of gaining insight into certain wave-turbulence enco unters in the atmosphere. A three-layer stratified fluid system, consi sting of a (thick) strongly stratified inversion layer, sandwiched bet ween an upper turbulent layer and a lower non-turbulent weakly stratif ied layer, was employed. Oscillating-grid-induced shear-free turbulenc e was used in the upper layer. During the experiments, a fourth (inter facial) layer developed in the region between the inversion and the tu rbulent layer, and most of the wave-turbulence interactions were confi ned to this layer. Detailed measurements of the vertical velocity stru cture, internal-wave parameters and mixing characteristics were made i n the stratified layers and, whenever possible, the results were compa red to available theoretical predictions.
