Abstract
Criteria for LWR containment designs developed a generation ago are no longer adequate. Recent research has improved knowledge about severe accidents but this has not been synthesized into practical design crit eria. The beginning of such a synthesis, a set of accident surrogates which could be used for design, is proposed.
