Abstract
Effect of gibberellic acid on biomass and artemisinin production by Ar temisia annua L. cultivated in the open. - The effect of gibberellic a cid (GA(3)) treatment on biomass and artemisinin production by A. annu a plants grown in field conditions was investigated. Height, branche n umber and artemisinin equivalent content were studied. An increased bi omass was observed with plants treated with 40 and 80 mg/l of GA(3), b ut no effect on branche number was observed. The artemisinin equivalen t content in both leaves and young buds was evaluated by an immunoassa y procedure. The results show that the artemisinin equivalent content is not readily correlated with the GA(3) concentrations applied. The s trongest effect was observed with young buds of plants treated with 80 mg/l of GA(3). Hereby the artemisinin equivalent content was almost t wice as high as the control (1.3 and 0.77% dry weight respectively).
