Abstract
New field observations from the northern termination of the Kootenay a re show that lower Paleozoic rocks assigned to the Kootenay terrane ar e depositionally linked to and conformable with underlying rocks that form part of the North American Cordilleran miogeocline. Accordingly, models involving an allochthonous origin for the Kootenay terrane shou ld be reevaluated. The presence of coarse clastic rocks and mafic volc anic rocks within the lower Paleozoic sequence of the Kootenay are is explained in terms of intermittent early Paleozoic extensional deforma tion, such as is well documented elsewhere along the Cordilleran margi n of the North American craton.
