During the life cycle of Dipodascopsis tothii the ungerminated ascospo
res contained substantially more lipid (10.9%, w/w) than the germinate
d cells (7.3%, w/w). However, as the life cycle proceeded towards the
differentiation phase and ascosporogenesis, the total lipid content de
creased further to 6.4% (w/w) and then increased again to 7.4% (w/w).
During the germination phase the neutral lipid fraction (mainly triacy
lglycerols) decreased while the phospholipid fraction (mainly phosphat
idylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine) increased. The opposite tren
d was found during the differentiation phase. The results on changes i
n total lipid, neutral lipid and phospholipid during the life cycle of
D. tothii agree with the results obtained by other authors for relate
d and unrelated fungal taxa. During the differentiation phase substant
ial amounts of free fatty acids, of which the biological role is still
unclear, were produced.
