Abstract
Chemotaxonomic studies were performed on strains of lactobacilli of un certain taxonomic position isolated from spoiled beer. Five strains we re found to be distinct from other Lactobacillus species. Their morpho logy and physiology agree with that of a Lactobacillus species which w as previously designated ''Lactobacillus lindneri''. The separate spec ies status of these strains was confirmed by comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. We propose L. lindneri as a valid species of the g enus Lactobacillus. Strain DSM 20690 is proposed as the type strain. A n rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probe allows a reliable identification of L. lindneri.
