Abstract
A pressing concern in library and information science is to understand the social context within which the generation and dissemination of i nformation takes place in organizational settings. This paper examines the problems involved in the attempt to account for, in theoretical a nd empirical terms, the social context within which information is gen erated, sought for, acquired, evaluated, organized, disseminated, and used in complex formal organizations. It describes the findings of res earch based on innovative theoretical approach that focuses on one imp ortant element of the social context of information, called the inform ation use environment. Based on the work of Taylor (1991; 1986) and Gi ddens (1984; 1979) this approach represents a conceptual advance that improves our understanding of the complexities of the working world of information professionals.
