Abstract
Subpicosecond Gaussian pulse propagation in an erbium-doped fiber ampl ifier is studied. An analytic expression for the pulse-broadening fact or is obtained that includes the effects of gain, in addition to quadr atic and cubic dispersion arising from the absorption and the emission spectra. The analytic results are compared with those obtained from n umerical studies that incorporate precise gain and index wavelength de pendences, Good agreement is obtained within the 1.53-1.56-mu m wavele ngth range for input pulses as short as 0.25 ps.
