Abstract
The light-induced director axis reorientation in a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal is investigated experimentally. Several-o rder-of-magnitude enhancement in light sensitivity and response speed of the director axis reorientation is achieved by incorporation of dic hroic dyes into the liquid crystal. A novel scheme for self-aligned sp atial filtering by use of the dye-doped liquid crystal is also propose d and is demonstrated with milliwatt laser powers and millisecond upda ting times.
