Abstract
Double ionization of helium differential in energy transfer, epsilon, is studied for both high-energy Compton photons and charged particles. The ratios of double to single ionization, R(C)(epsilon) for Compton scattering, and R(Z)(epsilon) for charged particles, are found to disp lay an unexpected behavior: For large epsilon up to the two-body binar y encounter (BE) limit, epsilon(BE), we find R(C)(epsilon) = R(Z)(epsi lon) similar or equal to 0.86% in good agreement with recent experimen tal data. For even larger epsilon > epsilon(BE), R(C)(epsilon) and R(Z )(epsilon) are modified by an ''exchange shakeoff'' mechanism. At epsi lon much greater than epsilon(BE) much greater than 1, both differenti al (unlike integrated) ratios are predicted to approach the photoioniz ation limit.
