Abstract
A series of highly crystalline beta-sialons prepared by self-propagati ng high-temperature synthesis (SHS) has been characterized by powder X -ray diffraction, Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy. The microdomai n-type structure of the products (with general composition Si6-zAlzOzN 8-z where 0.5 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 2.0) is ve ry similar to that of beta-sialons prepared using conventional synthes is methods.
