Abstract
The characteristics of ionically conducting membranes, formed by immob ilizing liquid solutions of lithium salts in polymer matrices, are dis cussed. These ionic membranes are dimensionally stable and have very p romising transport and electrochemical properties. However, these favo urable characteristics are contrasted by a poor stability of the lithi um electrode interface. Therefore, the direct application of these ion ic membranes as electrolyte separators in long-life, rechargeable lith ium batteries is presently somewhat problematic. On the other hand, th ese membranes are quite suitable for the fabrication of new-design, pr imary power sources or of devices based on non-metal, high-surface ele ctrodes, such as laminated rocking-chair batteries and solid-state, re dox supercapacitors.
