Abstract
The validation of a clinical laboratory report is a process that guara ntees the results contained in the report have been obtained under sat isfactory metrological conditions and that they are compatible with th e information available on the patient. This validation is generally c arried out manually by a clinical laboratory professional, but also ma y be done by an expert system properly programmed, such as the VALAB s ystem. The evaluation presented in this article consists of comparing human and system decisions of validation for 500 randomly selected cli nical laboratory reports from hospitalized patients. In this evaluatio n, 84,8% of the reports examined by the VALAB are accepted directly wi thout any human aid, and only 15,2% require examination by clinical bi ochemists.
