The unique female-plumaged type specimen (Zoologisches Museum Berlin 4
9.296) of the Superb Bird of Paradise Lophorina superba pseudoparotia
Stresemann 1934 is in fact a hybrid. It is the product of the first re
corded hybridization between L. superba and Parotia carolae (Paradisae
idae), and the first hybrid known to involve the latter species. Morph
ological and biometrical comparisons are presented to demonstrate that
the hybrid individual is nearly perfectly intermediate between the pu
tative parent species in colouring and dimensions, indicating that, li
ke other recorded hybrid birds of paradise, it is a first generation c
ross.
